“Digital India” Tops Suspension of Internet Global Ranking

In less than 40 days of 2021, the state has twice enforced the internet lockdown for more than 24 hours

With months of ongoing farmers’ protest in India, the state tops the list of internet suspension right at the beginning of the year with around 10 suspensions in the first two months.

This is not the first time that India tops and leads in the global rankings of internet suspension.

Earlier, during the last four years, the internet facility has been locked over 400 times in India with some of the prolonged reported internet shutdowns.

However, with a few weeks down in 2021, the internet has been snapped multiple times in a bid to counter the ongoing protests in burning India.

In less than 40 days of 2021, the state has twice enforced the internet lockdown in Delhi and adjoining states for more than 24 hours.

Instances of internet service closure have been increasing in India especially at the protest sites.

According to Forbes, an American business magazine, India shuts the internet more frequently than any other democracy in the world.

The longest instance of suspension by an elected government was in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 when the services were curtailed for 552 days.

Whereas, the suspension in 2019 and 2020 remained for more than 13,000 hours on around 164 occasions.

Apparently, the internet cessation has not helped curb misinformation but instead led to uncertainty and anxiety among the people.
