Unpitying Media Houses in Pakistan Have Conflicting Policies

Amid coronavirus pandemic, unpitying media houses in Pakistan have been setting off a number of their employees especially the ones underpaid and contrarily opening jobs on several posts with remunerative salaries.

Nafees, a quinquagenarian, who gave over 27 years of dedication to his organization with a handful pay, received the letter inscribed with the “end of service” decree.

Nafees joined “Jang Group” in 1994 as a security guard and served his employer diligently for many years.

However, the group has announced a number of vacancies for executive posts while choosing the ‘slash and burn method’ for low-paid employees.

Pakistan’s media industry is in throes of decline these days. The channels have put underpaid employees in deep pain with unforeseen terminations due to claimed financial crunch.

Considered if such bad are the circumstances, the announcement of job openings by GEO TV seems comical.

Apart from this, a number of high-paid anchorpersons including journalist Hassan Nisar have been minting money while spewing filth on-screen.

However, Nafees, who was receiving peanuts as compared to anchorpersons and other executive employees, has been kicked-out on a few days’ notice.

At the time of termination, self-acclaimed Pakistan’s number one news channel GEO was paying its security guard a sum less than Rs 20,000 even that he put 27 years of hard work.

Melancholy doesn’t end here, the media houses in Pakistan act hypocritically as they all covered protests by government employees but pass over protests by media workers of different organizations against their employers over non-payment of salaries or lay-off.

The organizations like GEO have been persistently exploiting their employees while the workers are compelled to work due to worsened economic conditions in Pakistan.
