Iraqi Men Can Get Millions For Marrying Second Time

Bank's offer sparked rage among the women rights activists

WEB DESK: Since Islam is one of the religions that permits polygamy and encourage men to practice it if they are financially stable. However, most of men abstain from it being cash-squeezed. But, now a state-owned bank in Iraq, Rasheed Bank, has announced to give easy loans worth 10 Million Iraqi Dinars to its employees wishing to get married another time.

Rasheed Bank is one of Iraq’s largest state-owned banks, with more than 138 branches across the country.

The bank has put certain conditions to be eligible for loan. The applicant and his first wife should not have previously received any similar benefits from the government.

The bank has announced that the loan would be provided on easy installments.

However, the offer has sparked anger among women rights activities as well as the women in public offices.

Denouncing the move, Hanan Al Fatlawi, an Advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister on Women’s Affairs, tweeted “It is shameful that such a statement comes from a respectable government bank. Women are not a commodity for display or sale,” she added.

After a mixed reaction with more of it in against t by the women rights’ activists, the bank issued a statement clarifying its position. It said that the decision was taken to encourage men to marry widows and divorcees who are not financially secure and stable.

It added that the bank held no legal right to convince or stop anybody from getting married second time.
