A nun knelt to beg police personnel to refrain from launching a crackdown on protesters including children who had come out to denounce military rule
A nun’s moving and courageous photo from Myanmar made headlines where she sank to knees before the policemen and begged them to spare protesters and kill her instead.
In Myitkyina city of Myanmar, donned in a white habit, a nun’s photo who knelt to beg police personnel to refrain from launching a crackdown on protesters including children who had come out to denounce military rule made rounds on the internet.

As Guardian reported, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng explained about the gesture in the candid photo, “I knelt down … begging them not to shoot and torture the children, but to shoot me and kill me instead”.
The act of bravery was received appreciation across the world especially the critics of the junta.
The civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi was taken down by the military on February 1.
However, there was a backlash from the public as they took to the streets against the military regime and demanded the restoration of democracy.
In response, the junta resorted to the use of force to contain pro-democracy protesters. The use of teargas, water cannon, and even rubber and real bullets was done.

On Monday, as the demonstrators left homes and assembled on streets in Myitkyina city, the police started encircling them.
Worried at this, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng ran to the policemen, sank to her knees and pleaded with them to leave protesters and kill her instead.
“The police were chasing to arrest them and I was worried for the children,” she said.
Two policemen in response also knelt and joined together before Sister Ann but moments later, the police started firing at the gathering behind her.
A local rescue team confirmed two men were killed on the protest site.
The nun said she would not cease to stand up for children.
