PDM Lands on a Make-or-Break Point In Sixth Month

JUI-F and PML-N have taken a hardline on leaving the assemblies ahead of the long march planned on March 26

The opposition alliance, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), has reached a make-or-break point right before its long march at the end of this month as two major parties would try to persuade PPP over en masse resignations.

PDM leadership will meet today in Islamabad to discuss the critical issue of resignations from the assembly which Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has so far opposed.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have taken a hardline on leaving the assemblies ahead of the long march.

However, there is a split in the alliance as PPP is not convinced over it. It rather wants to rest in the system to change it, unlike PML-N and JUI-F.

PDM Head Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman said in a press conference on Monday that the long march would be futile if it was done without leaving the assemblies.

While talking to media, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz certified it too. She said that PDM’s component parties have backed each other on different occasions.

“We will try to convince those who do not agree over resignations”, Maryam told.

The third major party in the alliance, PPP, is reluctant on the move as it rules Sindh province and has much at stake than its partners.

Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman and Maryam Nawaz are confident that they would persuade PPP leadership as there are more pros of mass resignations than cons.

Therefore, the Islamabad meeting today would be a make-or-break point for PDM as it would be a tug of war between the parties holding opposite opinions over a crucial matter.
