Winning 1992 World Cup, Will Imran Khan Triumph as PM?

Pakistan defeated England in the final by 22 runs, and the 25-year-old Wasim Akram was declared as 'man of the match'

International Cricket Council (ICC) is celebrating 29th anniversary of 1992 World Cup where Pakistan defeated England in the final by 22 runs under skipper Imran Khan.

The match was played at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia.

Some of the prominent players of the 1992 world cup included Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Javed Miandad, Mushtaq Ahmed, Rameez Raja, and Wasim Akram who changed the history of cricket.

Despite a difficult start and several hurdles, Pakistani team still managed to bag the trophy with its exceptional performance and determination.

In the final, skipper Imran Khan-led the team with 72 runs despite his injured shoulder.

ICC tweeted a video to relive the memories of the 1992 world cup.

The bowling duo of Mushtaq Ahmed and Wasim Akram made it difficult for English players to score 250 runs after winning the toss.

Akram was named ‘man of the match’ after his game-changing performance with three wickets.

Currently serving as Pakistan’s bowling coach, Waqar Younis couldn’t participate in the 1992 World Cup due to his back injury.

Besides his extraordinary performances in six World Cups, Javed Miandad recollected the memories of how he managed to continue despite being troubled by a peculiar virus that made him sweat a lot.

After Miandad, Inzamam-ul-Haq was considered as Pakistan’s best batsman due to his power-packed performance in the semi-final between Pakistan-New Zealand 1992 World Cup match where he scored 60 runs of 37 balls.

However, skipper Imran Khan retired from cricket following the 1992 World Cup victory and after 26 years of constant struggle, the admired Khan took the charge as Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2018.

Furthermore, former Pakistani skipper Ramiz Raja said that the 1992 World Cup taught him, ‘when there is a will, there is a way’.

Raja added that despite all challenges, the team swedged for the victory and as a Pakistani, it was probably the second time after independence when the people would have felt so jubilant.

Those who have played with Khan look at him as a fighter and believe that he would also lead Pakistan to victory as a prime minister just like he led a young team to become champions.
