Karachi Traffic Police Urged to Let Unregularized Rickshaws Run

With Eid-ul-Fitr less than two weeks away, Sindh secretary has written a letter to the Karachi traffic police requesting to let unregularized rickshaws ply on the roads in light of high court’s orders.
During the holy month of Ramazan, the high-ups of traffic police have acted as silent spectators on the rise of bribery and bullying of rickshaw drivers.
In a recent incident, a tri-wheeler was confiscated despite submission of a Rs 550 fine on the pretext of being unauthorized.

In reponse to emerging cases of unruly impounding of rickshaws across the city by Karachi traffic police, Sindh Secretary wrote a letter and requested to let unregularized rickshaws ply on the roads of metropolis amid prevailing pandmeic situation and forthcoming Eid festival.
The letter said that the delegation of All Karachi CNG Rickshaw Owners Welfare Association met with the secretary and put forward their grievances regarding hardships faced in smooth operations.
The rickshaw drivers noted that their cases regarding authorization of their vehicles were still pending in court.
The secretary also referred to the Sindh high court’s order that all the poor rickshaw drivers should be allowed to run smooth operations and earn bread until their vehicles were regularized.
Earlier, Sindh Transport Secretary had also written a letter to DIG Traffic Police, demanding release of 84 seized rickshaws on the same pretext.
Further in a video message, All Rickshaw Association President Syed Imran Zaidi said, “The police have been harassing the poor rickshaw drivers for past several days”.
He demanded the police to do justice with them instead of imposing heavy fines.
On the matter of rickshaws’ impounding, Syed Imran Zaidi told he had taken the matter to the provincial transport minister following which the department’s secretary wrote a letter to DIG traffic police but it made no difference in police’s demeanor.
