Sub-Continent Acting Guru Dilip Kumar Died at 98

The film legend of the sub-continent Mohammed Yusuf Khan, commonly known as Dilip Kumar, died this morning after a prolonged illness in a hospital of Mumbai.

The legendary actor, born in 1922 in Pakistan’s city of Peshawar, passed away at 98.

The sad news at the beginning of the day brought inscrutable countenance on the faces of millions of his fans not just in India but around the world.

A couple of days earlier, Dilip Kumar’s family had shared that his health was improving and they were hopeful that the Mughal-e-Azam actor would be discharged soon.

Career

Known as the ‘Tragedy King’ and ‘First Khan of Bollywood’, Dilip Kumar made his acting debut with Jwar Bhata in 1944 and worked in more than 65 movies. The last time he appeared on the big screen as a lead was Qila in 1998.

Dilip Kumar had a relationship with actress Madhubala but they never married. Instead, the veteran actor tied the knot with actress Saira Banu in 1966.

Accolades

The adroit actor bagged Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993 for his contribution to the film industry.

Dilip Kumar also holds the Guinness World Record for being the actor with the most ‘Best Actor Awards’.

The tragedy king had been conferred with Padma Bhushan in 1991, the third-highest civilian award of India, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in the field of Indian cinema in 1994, and the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in 2015.

The government of Pakistan also accoladed him with the highest civilian award, Nishan-e-Imtiaz, in 1998. He had also worked with melodious Pakistani singer Madam Noor Jehan in the film Jugnu in 1947.

The deceased actor also remained a part of the upper house of the Indian Parliament between 2000 and 2006.
