Burhan Muzaffar Wani, who was martyred by the Indian Army in a fake encounter in the Kokernag area of Kashmir on July 6, is still alive in the hearts of Kashmiris for infusing new life to the freedom movement.

Former Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, instead of picking up weapons, advocated against Indian rule in Kashmir on social media.

The killing of his brother in 2015 further strengthened his resolve to fight against the Indian occupation and he then embarked on a long and painful journey.

Many young Kashmiris consider him a symbol of defiance against the Indian oppression and joined hands with him to highlight the freedom struggle.

It was the first time that the crushed Muslims of the region saw a new direction to struggle for their right to freedom.

Burhan spread awareness among the youngsters about their rights using the power of social media. He ran effective digital campaigns in an atmosphere full of terror with no facilities.

The poster boy of Hizbul Mujahideen, along with his two associates, was martyred in a fake encounter by the Indian troops and triggered a mass uprising in the occupied territory.

The freedom fighter, trapped in a cordon, made his last wish on a phone call to pray for his forgiveness before he was shot in a gun battle.

In his last video, he addressed the Kashmiri youth and asked them to disrupt cordons and help the freedom fighters escape, whenever they can, by hurling stones at Indian forces.

His death was a watershed moment in the occupied territory and since then, more and more youngsters are disappearing into woods to imitate his footsteps.
