One Rival Beat Other in Football Cups But They Were Miles Apart

The rivalry dates back to 1982 when Argentina and Great Britain had a war over the Falkland Islands

One of the rivals emerged as a winner while the other one lost the title but interestingly, they weren’t competing with each other. It happened on Sunday when the finals of Copa America and Euro 2020 were played on separate continents and arch-rivals were in contest.

England lost to Italy on penalties in Euro 2020 final while Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 to clinch the title from defending champions.

The two arch-rivals, England and Argentina, were not even playing against each other but one’s victory and other’s defeat still made their respective fans, miles apart, jubilant and sorrowful.

The football rivalry between both teams is unusual as they both are located on different continents.

It dates back to 1982 when Argentina and Great Britain had a war over the Falkland Islands.

Both countries claimed control over the islands, located around 300 miles of Argentina’s east coast. The Islands were colonized by the British in 1833 and all Argentines were expelled from it.

They now operate as British Overseas Territories (BOT).
