Several hundred men and women gathered to mourn the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain in the month of Moharram have raised concerns for the already deepening Delta variant in the country.

With covid-19 cases ragging in Pakistan, the Moharram gatherings with no social distancing have further spiked up the fear.

Videos from several cities have shown hundreds of men beating their chests to the tune of religious mourning songs with no precautionary measures to curb the variant.

The Moharram processions were tightly packed with several thousand people for flagellation and not only this, several (Majalis) mourning congregations took place amid the spreading virus.

Earlier at the beginning of the month, special guidelines were announced by National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) to mark the occasion.

The NCOC had stressed that all majalis and processions must be held in accordance with the government-mandated coronavirus safety protocols but to no avail.

On the other hand, the Afghan Taliban had taken over Afghanistan and the fear of any violent activity has increased.

In the given circumstances, the religious ceremonies during the month of Moharram especially the huge processions of Moharram 9th and 10th may result in enhancing the risk of contracting the Delta variant.
