Ombudsperson Kashmala Tariq orders dismissal of Pemra DG

Haji Adam is found guilty of harassing a woman.

Haji Adam, the director general (DG) of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), has been dismissed from service on being found guilty of harassing a woman.

Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplaces Kashmala Tariq ordered to dismiss the   director general of Pemra.

In January 2020, a woman had filed a sexual harassment petition against Pemra DG Haji Adam. The federal ombudsperson had issued an interim decision to suspend the DG Pemra in February 2020.

Haji Adam also approached the high court against the interim decision, but the court also rejected the appeal of director general of Pemra and directed him to approach the federal ombudsperson.

Kashmala Tariq has issued a 16-page decision saying that Haji Adam failed to provide his defence evidence, so he is removed from his position and fined Rs2 million.

The federal ombudsperson said that co-accused Pemra General Manager Fakharuddin Mughal is demoted from his position and fined Rs500,000.

In the decision, Kashmala Tariq said that Pemra should install CCTV cameras in all the important places to prevent such incidents.

She ordered Pemra to form a committee to hear complaints of harassment of women.

Pemra has been directed to terminate the DG Admin & HR  within 60 days of receiving the copy of the decision.
