Legislation begins in Parliament, Senate Standing Committee on Communications approves National Highways Amendment Bill

Drunk driving can now be fined up to Rs 50,000 and imprisoned for up to six months, parliament has begun legislating. The Upper House Standing Committee on Communications approved the National Highways Amendment Bill.
A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Communications was held under the chairmanship of Prince Ahmad Omar Zai. Senator Mohsin Aziz was introduced as a private member in the meeting. National Highways The bill to amend the Safety Ordinance 2000 was considered and the committee unanimously approved the amendment bill.

If the bill is passed, the National Highways and Motorways Police will be able to impose a fine of up to Rs 25,000 or one month imprisonment or both on those who drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs and other narcotics.
Senator Mohsin Aziz said that if an accused was caught driving while intoxicated again, the fine would be increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 and one month imprisonment would be increased to six months. Will be presented for approval at the meeting.
The meeting of the Standing Committee reviewed in detail the plan to widen and rehabilitate the section of National Highway (N-35) from Muslimabad, Havelian to Shahina Jamil Hospital adjoining Abbottabad city.
The Secretary Ministry of Communications informed the committee that the project includes widening of 17 km from Havelian to Abbottabad for which there are some difficulties in obtaining land. The committee was informed that Rs.11.40 billion had been set aside under the first PC-1 of the project. The district government was consulted for this in 2017, but it could not be implemented due to the objections of the Planning Commission.
The Standing Committee directed the District Government to re-determine the cost of the land and send it to the Secretary, Ministry of Communications so that it could be implemented as soon as possible.
