Pakistan will have no gas in a few years; a serious crisis likely to hit the country

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has raised alarm over upcoming gas scarcity to hit Pakistan in a few years.

Fawad Chaudhry issued a warning that Pakistan will face a serious gas crisis in a few years as the resources are depleting by nine per cent every year for the last two years.

He made the statement in a press conference after attending the federal cabinet meeting today.

Fawad Chaudhry said that Pakistan will have no gas in a few years and the people should change their habits now for getting the gas at cheaper rates.

While detailing the gas supply, the federal minister said that 78 per cent of nationals living in different parts of the country are bearing 78 per cent burden for relying on coal and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and other means, whereas, the gas is only available to the 23 per cent of people in big cities at subsidised rates.

He said that the gas system will be restructured by the federal government for ensuring an equal supply. Chaudhry said that urea production was increased due to the uninterrupted gas supply to the industries.

Regarding other decisions taken by the cabinet, he said that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has been granted a 12-month extension for the replacement of the currency notes of Rs10, 50, 100 and 1000. The minister advised people to change currency notes in a year.

He announced that the cabinet had nominated two federal ministers including Asad Umar and Zubaida Jalal to visit Gwadar for listening to the issues of protesting fishermen in the port city.

Chaudhry also asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to release a tender for the procurement of electronic voting machines (EVMs) to be used in the next elections.
