Government and Opposition Rift Put Country on Thin Ice

The government is launching a crackdown on opposition while the opposition is obstinate in organizing rallies despite coronavirus threat

WEB DESK: The intractable attitudes of the government and opposition have put the country on thin ice as the political scenario is broiling.

The next rally of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) will be organized in Multan on the foundation day of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) at Qasim Bagh on November 30.

The government in reaction to foil the rally has launched a crackdown on the opposition parties and arrested several workers. Mosa Gillani of PPP and son of the former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani was arrested along with other workers. However, they were released on bail.

He also tweeted a list of political workers of his hometown who have been detained by the police which he accused was done to stop them from mobilizing masses before PDM’s rally.

Subsequently, the opposition parties are obstinate on their standpoints and organizing public rallies and political programs despite coronavirus restrictions amid second wave of the pandemic virus.

Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) President Maryam Nawaz has also announced to participate in Multan rally just two days after funeral of her grandmother to occur on November 28.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will also address the rally via video link as he is under isolation due to the coronavirus restrictions.

Commenting on the prevailing situation, a senior political analyst Rasool Bux Raees said that there was a chance of confrontation between the government and opposition.

He said that if the gathering site was sealed off before the rally, the packs of crowd would convert into small rallies.

Raees expressed that the opposition leaders would come and leave after delivering speeches but people would be brought on buses and vehicles. There is a threat of virus spread as precautionary guidelines would not be implemented.
