12 candidates passed away ahead of delayed Karachi LG polls

Twelve candidates have passed away while waiting for the organisation of Karachi LG polls which was postponed for the third time by the ECP.

Twelve candidates have passed away while waiting for the organisation of Karachi Local Government (LG) polls which was postponed for the third time by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

A day before holding LG polls, the ECP postponed the LG elections in Karachi scheduled for October 16 after receiving multiple requests from the Sindh government citing the shortage of government officials.

“The decision was taken in the best interest of public to ensure their safety & security. The elections required static deployment of law enforcement personnel which was refused by Interior. All 5000 polling stations declared sensitive,” an ECP spokesperson said on Twitter.

The commission decided to hold another meeting after 15 days to finalise date for local govt elections.

While waiting the LG polls, 12 candidates passed away in Karachi. The candidates had filed their nomination papers in different union councils (UC) for the positions of chairman, vice-chairman and general councillor.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) announced to file a petition to the Supreme Court (SC) against the postponement of the Karachi LG polls.
