Govt’s new strategy to avoid contempt of court

Federal government has directed law minister to legislate not to provide funds for general elections in Punjab and to avoid contempt of court

New strategy offederal government to delay elections, decision to amend law of contempt of court, draft has been prepared.

To avoid contempt of court by not implementing orders of Supreme Court, the federal government has decided to bring another draft law.

On order of the Supreme Court, federal government is coming up with a new strategy to avoid the legal issues of delay in the issue of general elections of Punjab. Members of cabinet have agreed on this matter and consultations are being held on how to avoid contempt of court for non-provision of funds and security plan to Election Commission. In this regard, ruling coalition has found a solution.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar broke the contempt of court proceedings, government has given a signal to Ministry of Law to change law on contempt of court, Ministry of Law is ready to amend Article 204 of Constitution.

It should be noted that according to order of Supreme Court, the Finance Ministry has to give funds to Election Commission by April 10 for Punjab elections. Election Commission will submit report to Supreme Court on April 11.

On this basis, contempt of court bill is likely to be brought in parliament. Contempt of Court Act was also amended in 2012.

According to sources, the contempt of court clause can be removed by a two-thirds majority. Judicial powers regarding contempt of court are clear in Article 204.

Joint Session of Parliament is also of utmost importance today as Supreme Court Practice and Procedures Bill is on agenda. This bill was sent back to Parliament by President.

Bill will be approved in a joint session of Parliament as law will come into force ten days after approval.
