Is Ashiq-Maryam Boxing Challenge Stooping to New Lows?

Punjab Information Adviser Firdous Ashiq Awan agreed to have a boxing match with PML-N's leader Maryam Nawaz to settle things all at once

New trends are in vogue in the indigenous politics with debates tending to replace discussions and now, challenges of a fight are being thrown at each other as Firdous Ashiq Awan challenged Maryam Nawaz for a boxing match which people believe is analogous to stooping to new lows to take edge over the opponent.

Likewise the rest of the world, the discussions between the representatives of different political parties on different talk shows have remained a trend in Pakistan as well.

Recently, it stepped up to the next level and famous television anchor and veteran journalist Kamran Khan organized a formal debate between ex-Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar over the LNG purchase issue.

The first-of-its-kind debate in Pakistan was watched by thousands of Pakistanis on televisions and on the internet.

Another TV anchor Fareeha Idrees followed the footsteps of the veteran journalist and opened the platform of her TV program on Abb Tak channel for Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Spokesperson Maryam Aurangzaib.

The government and opposition officials debated over the petroleum inquiry report compiled by a special investigation committee and publicized last week.

However, things seem to go beyond discussions and debates now.

On his visit, Pakistan-born Boxer Amir Khan advised the Punjab Information Adviser Firdous Ashiq Awan to have a boxing match with PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz.

The adviser accepted the challenge with open arms and claimed that she would knock Maryam out in few minutes to settle things at once.

Such immature comments received an ambivalent response but the statements of this caliber from an adviser for her political opponent are not only derisive but lower than the stature of her designation.

Maryam Nawaz Should Weigh Words Before Speaking

A number of people have questioned what the politicians are trying to teach them.

The domain of politics is where tolerance remains atop and flexibility can be said of its mainstay.

But, the politicians in Pakistan seem to have swerved from the course and apparently forgotten the basic teachings of how an opponent must still be regarded irrespective of the differences.

The political climate in the country is gradually turning warm to hot as the government and opposition have locked horns against each other and are reluctant to mend things.

Still, the people believe that the political leaders must not stoop so low in an attempt to tarnish their rivals and must stay graceful despite disagreements.
