Patients Suffer Negligence, Denied Treatment at NICVD

It is a recognized fact that in both under-developed and developing countries, the standard of health services the public expects is not delivered and similarly, patients visiting the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) suffer due to mismanagement, and negligence of the hospital staff.

NICVD is the first tertiary cardiac care institute in South Asia as well as the flagship facility for cardiology in Pakistan.

Situated in Karachi, NICVD caters to the cardiovascular needs of a vast majority of patients from all provinces of Pakistan as well as patients from other neighboring countries.

It has come to notice that patients suffer negligence of NICVD staff.

Speaking to News360, patients claimed that they come from far-off areas, and despite taking appointments from the doctor, they are made to wait and often have to return without a checkup.

Furthermore, the patients gravely added that hospital management is also not cooperating properly while patients’ deaths are on the rise due to delayed surgeries.

Many patients who visit from far-flung areas are forced to stay in Karachi at their expense due to the non-cooperation of the hospital management awaiting treatment.

Even after taking prior appointments, patients go through the inconvenience of moving from one department to another for follow-up.

Very often, cardiac patients are only ‘speciously’ examined and sent home without receiving proper treatments, including surgeries and procedures required.

Due to the dearth of surgeries of critical patients, the mortality rate is increasing.

Speaking to News360 a patient named Anusha visited NICVD as she required to undergo surgery to treat her ailment.

However, she did not receive the required treatment and had to return home with a prescription only.

When NICVD Chief Nadeem Qamar was approached by News360 regarding the suffering of the patients, he said, “Some operations were postponed due to coronavirus”.

He further added, “I don’t know about the deaths of patients, I will be able to check and tell again. Soon the facility for these patients will be improved”.

NICVD caters to the cardiovascular needs of a vast majority of patients from all provinces of Pakistan as well and patients from neighboring countries. It is responsible for training the bulk of local cardiac physicians, nurses, and paramedics throughout the country.
