In Pakistan, Donkeys Win Race Against Horses

Besides the increasing human population, the number of donkeys has also increased in Pakistan by 100,000 to reach 5.6 million during the current fiscal year 2020-21 (FY21) but the population of horses remained stagnant.

The Pakistan Economic Survey 2020-21 revealed that the growth rate in livestock remained around 3% in the current financial year.

Interestingly, like every year, the population of donkeys in Pakistan has increased but the number of horses and mules has not shown any growth during the past 13 years.

The survey showed that the total number of animals in the country swell to 21.31 million as compared to 20.7 during FY 2019-20.

On the other hand, farm animals in the country that include buffaloes, goats, sheep, and camels reached 5.7 million during the current FY.

As per the survey, the number of sheep in the country has increased by 400,000 and reached 31.6 million from 31.2 million.

Similarly, the number of goats soared by 2.1 million in a year and it reached the figure of 80.3 million from 78.2 million.

Not only this, buffaloes’ population in Pakistan increased from 41 million and reached 42.4 million.

Meanwhile, the camel population that was 1.1 million remains dormant and no increase or decrease in the numbers was revealed in the survey.

Whereas, the poultry sector has shown growth and the number of chickens increased to 1.57 billion from 1.44 billion in the current financial year.
