FBR Stuns With Performance to Cull Smuggling

New FBR chairman has been vehement to cull smuggling to protect economy from suffering damage of billions of rupees every year due to unscrupulous practice

Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) surprised critics with its performance between July 2020 and January 2021 as the volume of its recoveries to cull smuggling during the first seven months of the current fiscal year remained much higher than the whole previous year.

FBR seized smuggled goods worth Rs35 billion during the first seven months of the current fiscal year (July 2020-Jan 2021) which is equivalent to the recoveries done during the past whole year.

Overall, the performance of the FBR improved by 59% in terms of seizure of confiscated items.

During the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year, the Pakistan Customs had seized goods worth Rs22 billion.

This year, a 66% rise has so far been recorded in the confiscation of smuggled vehicles as the Non-Custom Paid (NCP) vehicles worth Rs 11.3 billion have been seized so far.

As per FBR’s progress report between July 2020 and Jan 2020, the Pakistan Customs seized betel nuts worth Rs3.4 billion which is 105% more than the last year and fabrics valued at Rs 1.9 billion which is 28% higher.

The other items seized by Pakistan Customs in comparison to the increase when compared with the previous year include cigarettes worth Rs 553 million (70%), auto-parts equivalent to Rs 492 million (113%), electronic items valued at Rs 380 million (67%), Diesel worth Rs 899 million (93%) and gold/silver bars/jewelry valued Rs 271 million (104%).

The incumbent FBR Chairman Javed Ghani belongs to the Customs group and has served at important positions in the department.

Ever since he assumed the charge, the FBR chairman has been vehement to cull smuggling to protect the local economy from suffering damage of billions of rupees every year due to unscrupulous practice and many are citing his personal interest as the reason behind the impressive performance of the institution.

Besides this, the customs also seized rare falcons and a huge cache of drugs during the corresponding period. This year, the iodine weighing 6 million tons was seized by the customs which is used in the making of ice-meth.

Further, Pakistan Customs also sealed some 2,000 fuel stations across the country operating illegally.
