Anti-Terrorism Financing Unit (ATFU) of Sindh Police’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has been revamped to probe into the related cases on modern lines.

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and European Union (EU) handed over modern equipment to the renovated ATFU while UNODC Country Representative Dr Jeremy Milsom inaugurated the unit in Karachi in the presence of members from the international community.

On the occasion, CTD DIG Umar Shahid said that the unit has registered 147 cases pertaining to terror financing.

He said that in the past, they only focused on registration and probe of terrorism cases.

However, with the emerging circumstances and in line with the directives of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), CTD is busy tracing and eliminating elements behind the financing of terrorists.

DIG said ATFU was operational in the past but it has been upgraded in line with the modern requirements which will boost the investigation process.

He said that cases pertaining to Hundi and Hawala will be registered with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) but ATFU will probe into cases that are linked to the financing of proscribed organizations.

Addressing the participants, Sindh Forest Minister Taimur Talpur said the unit will help eliminate aid to terrorists.

He said UNODC and EU are with them in the efforts and added Pakistan has sacrificed the most in the war against terror unlike any other country.

The minister said terrorism needs to be uprooted by implementing the guidelines of FATF.
