Ophthalmologist Dr. Birbal killed by gunmen in Garden area

A lady doctor named Qaratul Ain was also injured when unknown assailants fired at car on Garden Lyari Expressway this is third incident of target killing this month

Renowned eye surgeon Dr. Birbal Ginani was killed while a lady doctor was injured by unknown assailants in Karachi on Thursday. Dr. Birbal Ginani belonged to the Hindu community.

Unknown assailants opened fire on a vehicle on the Garden Lyari Expressway, as a result of which a well-known ophthalmologist Dr. Birbal was killed and a lady doctor named Quratul Ain was injured.

Dr. Birbal Ginani was the former Director of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and also served as the Head of Spencer Eye Hospital. He also used to run a private clinic in Karachi’s Ranchhor Line area.

Hospital sources say that Dr. Quratul Ain has been shot in the shoulder and has been shifted to Civil Hospital for medical assistance. The body of Dr. Birbal Ginani was also shifted to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

The assailants managed to escape from the spot after carrying out the attack. Police say the Crime Scene Unit has been called to the scene. He said that apparently, this is an incident of target killing.

Police officials said the car was going from Ramaswamy area when armed men attacked Dr. Birbal Ginani near a hall near the Garden police station.

It should be noted that the incidents of target killing in Shahr Quaid are continuously increasing.

Earlier this month, religious scholar Maulana Abdul Qayyum Sufi was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Karachi.

Maulana Abdul Qayyum Sufi, a member of Pakistan Ulema Association, was targeted in Gulistan Johar Block 9 of Karachi.

Police said the cleric was shot dead by two armed men on a motorcycle while he was returning home after leading Fajr prayers. The deceased was also the head of the Noorani Islamic Center at Jamia Masjid Muhammadiyah.

Apart from this, another religious leader, Maulana Saleem Khatri, was shot dead by four motorcycle-borne suspects near Bilal Colony in Karachi.

It should be remembered that in February of this year, unknown armed men killed Syed Khalid Raza, Vice Chairman of the Federation of Private Schools, outside his residence in Karachi.

The firing incident took place in Golestan Johar Block 7 of Karachi.
