Arooj Aftab wins first Grammy in Best Global Music Performance category

The Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Arooj Aftab has won her first Grammy in the Best Global Music Performance category for her song Mohabbat.

The Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Arooj Aftab has won her first Grammy in the Best Global Music Performance category for her song Mohabbat.

Arooj Aftab is also nominated for Best New Artist prize which will be presented during the main Grammy telecast later Sunday.

Aftab said, “I am beyond thrilled.” “It feels great.”

“I’ve been very nervous all day. And we’re off to a good start.” said the singer.

In November last year, Pakistani singer and music composer Arooj Aftab had been nominated for the 64th Grammy Awards. Aftab is a Berklee College of Music trained composer, vocalist and producer. She has released three solo albums. Urooj Aftab works mostly in minimalist, neo-Sufi idioms and jazz.

The Grammy Awards had announced nominations for all 86 categories. About 12,000 music makers of the academy’s voting membership body vote for the awards.

The voting membership body represents all creative disciplines and genres, including songwriters, recording artists, engineers and producers.
