Cinema Industry Wants a Place in New Film Policy

In the difficult times of the coronavirus pandemic, the government of Pakistan is going to announce a new policy for the film and drama industry but fears exist that grappling cinema industry may get ignored once again.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry wrote that the new film policy will focus on waving off all major taxes on films.

“The policy is not only going to serve as a revival of the Pakistani entertainment industry promoting a positive image”, Fawad said.

The federal minister confirmed that the new film policy will be revealed next month and in September last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed related departments to formulate it.

Moreover, the federal minister met Pakistan Film Producers Association (PFPA) representative to discuss the policy and gather recommendations.

Fawad Chaudhry said, “PTI government had taken multiple initiatives like tax concessions and easing the process of obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) for filmmakers to boost the industry”.

In contrast to Fawad’s announcement of the new film policy, Atrium Cinema owner Nadeem Mandviwalla observed a grim outlook of already-clobbered industry.

Talking to News360, Mandviwalla said, “Pakistani cinema has been trying to get back on its feet for many years”.

Nadeem added that the cinema industry is in dire straits after the ban on the screening of Bollywood movies and coronavirus pandemic further aggravated the situation.
