Cinemas drop plan to screen T20 matches after KCB demands heavy tax

Cinemas KCB tax

Prominent critic and Voice of America journalist Umair Alvi has strongly criticised the Karachi Cantonment Board (KCB) for depriving Karachiites from watching the ICC T20 World Cup matches in cinemas by the demanding heavy tax from them.

Taking to Twitter, the journalist slammed the Karachi Cantonment Board for demanding heavy tax from the cinemas located in Atrium Mall for screening T20 matches.

He said that the cinemas in Atrium Mall had earlier announced to screen all the T20 matches for cricket fans. But, the KCB demanded heavy tax from the owners of cinema houses for showing the matches.

Umair Alvi said: “Shame on Karachi Cantonment Board for depriving the public to see ICC T20 World Cup matches in the cinemas by demanding heavy TAX!”

Earlier, National Command and Operation Centre Chief Asad Umar had allowed cinemas to open in July this year after corona cases fell across the country. Despite the permission, the cinemas have not yet been restored.

Speaking in support of journalist Umair Alvi, analysts say that the cinema industry in Pakistan is already suffering. In such a case, if the owners of some cinemas had tried to resume their business activities, the Karachi Cantonment Board has hampered their efforts.

They said that how Pakistan’s film industry will move forward if movie fans do not go to cinemas. Tickets have become so expensive due to heavy taxes that no one can afford to watch a movie in the cinema with his family.

They added that the government should declare the cinema and film industry completely tax-free so that good movies are produced in the country.
