Delhi Crime Wins Best Drama Series Emmy Award 2020

WEB DESK: Delhi Crime, a Netflix web series, won the Best Drama Series award at the 48th International Emmy Awards that took place on November 23.

South Asians all over the world perceive this as a massive achievement as the series was competing against United Kingdom’s “Criminal: UK”, Argentina’s “El jardín de bronce (The Bronze Garden) – Season 2” and Germany’s “Charité – season 2”.

The Netflix series is a transposed crime drama adapted from the heartbreaking investigation of the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder case that occurred in a neighborhood of Munirka, South Delhi.

The seven part series follows a 23-year-old physiotherapy student ,Nirbhaya, who was kidnapped and gang-raped mercilessly on a moving bus after which she succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

Delhi Crime is directed by Richie Mehta. Starring Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Adil Hussain, Rajesh Tailang, Vinod Sherawat, Denzil Smith, Gopal Dutt, Yashaswini Dayama and Jaya Bhattacharya.The director, Richie, paid the victim and her mother homage during his virtual acceptance speech.

He dedicated the award to all women who have not just encountered acts of violence inflicted on them by men, but have also been forced to solve the issue after.

He went on to tell the mother and the victim that he used to think about them everyday, adding that he hopes the world never forgets what they went through.

Actress Shefali Shah, who played the lead role of a deputy commissioner of police Vartika Chaturvedi, in the series, shared her excitement over the win through a tweet.

Delhi Crime premiered on Netflix in 2019 and is the first production from India to achieve an Emmy award.
