Fawad Khan emphasises need for films in regional languages

Pakistani superstar Fawad Khan emphasised the need for films in regional languages.

Pakistani superstar Fawad Khan, who returned to the big screen with the action-packed Punjabi film The Legend of Maula Jatt, emphasised the need for films in regional languages.

Fawad Khan’s new film The Legend of Maula Jatt is going to be released in Pakistan on October 13.

During an interview with Urdu daily Nawaiwaqt, when asked about working in more Punjabi films, Fawad Khan said, “I think and I have said this before that it is very important to make films in regional languages. Urdu is now our mother tongue and always has been, but films are not being made in regional languages.

“There are so many stories of  Punjab and films should be made on them. Films can be made on these stories in Urdu as well. But if films are made in Punjabi language, it will be better.”

In response to a question, Fawad Khan admitted that he did not understand the Punjabi language and said, “My memory is very weak, the words I spoke in the film, I must have forgotten them now, I will definitely watch the film and listen to my dialogues.” So I will ask about their meaning again. I don’t know how to speak Punjabi at all, there has never been a Punjabi-speaking environment in my house.”

When asked about the preparation for the role of Maula Jatt, Fawad Khan laughed and said, “Maula Jatt, I think that the status of a prince has been achieved and how does the prince walk, do you have to prepare for it?” He said, “It’s a joke, but my research to play the role of Maula Jatt was very limited.”

He said, “Maula Jatt was an old film, I had not even seen the whole film, I had only seen a few scenes, and since I could not speak Punjabi, I could not understand anything.”

He said, “From the point of view of the story, Maula Jatt is a film of a different era and The Legend of Maula Jatt is a film of today’s era. It was impossible for me to do the way Sultan Rahi did the character of Maula Jatt. That’s why I fought to do the role”.

Admitting that he can’t even come close to Sultan Rahi’s best work to his credit, he has developed the character of Maula Jatt to suit modern times.
