One of the leading Urdu dailies, Jang newspaper has been criticised for plagiarising an exclusive story of The Guardian on Karachi’s popular veiled rapper Eva B.

Jang Media Group was criticised by the author of Eva B’s story in the Guardian UK, Shah Meer Baloch who had interviewed the popular veiled rapper in Lyari, for plagiarising his story.

After noticing the publication of his story on Jang newspaper’s website, Shah Meer Baloch wrote on Twitter, “Hi @jang_akhbar you have published my @guardian report on Eva B without any credit. This is unethical.” He added, “Credit is necessary if they don’t get permission.”

However, Jang newspaper did not remove the story nor include the credit to the real author of the story so far.

It is not the first time that Jang and Geo media groups face criticism for plagiarising content from the original sources to air and publish on its platforms despite being listed amongst the top media groups in the country.

Earlier in January, Geo News had aired a stretched video version of Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed’s interview to BBC by its former reporter Farhat Javed Rabani that had raised questions of whether it was an attempt to steal the video or deliberately keep the female reporter out of the frame.

The BBC Urdu Editor Asif Farooqi had slammed the media group, saying on Twitter, “This is theft, don’t have the grace to give credit? At least don’t stretch the video to get the BBC logo and our reporter Farhat Javed Rabani out of the frame. Shameful!!!”

Reacting to the tweet, a journalist from Hum News had said, “Its @geonews_urdu @GeoJangPR habit of stealing videos and not giving due credit. It did the same with chairman senate exclusive video I posted (while blurring my name) where he can be seen talking about Big Brother.”

Sheikh Rasheed’s exclusive interview with BBC Urdu had been aired. The interior minister was interviewed by a senior reporter Farhat Javed Rabani.
