Joyland cleared for screening in Pakistan after cuts

The high-level committee established by the prime minister and the Film Censor Board during the review removed 7 more scenes and declared the film suitable for release in Pakistan.

After a review, the committee set up by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the full board of the Central Film Censor Board allowed the film ‘Joyland’ to be screened across Pakistan.

The film ‘Joyland’ will be released in theatres across the country on Friday as per its schedule.

The high-level committee and the Film Censor Board during the review removed 7 more scenes from the film and declared the film suitable for screening. After the cuts, Joyland will be screened in cinemas across the country tomorrow.

Earlier, after receiving written complaints regarding the film, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had cancelled the certificates issued by the Film Censor Board and banned its screening across the country.

PM Sharif had formed a high-level committee to review the ban on the film following strong reactions from the showbiz industry and social media, which had directed a full-board review of the movie.

PM’s aide on strategic reforms Dr Salman Sufi tweeted, “The film #Joyland has been cleared for release by the Censor board review committee formed at the direction of PM @CMShehbaz Freedom of speech is fundamental right & should be nourished within ambits of the law.”

The film is written by director Saim Sadiq and stars Alina Khan, Sarwat Gilani, Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Sania Saeed, Salmaan Pirzada and Sohail Sameer. The production team includes Sarmad Khoosat, Apoorva Guru Charan, Sana Jafri, Oliver Ridge, Lauren Mann and others.

The film Joyland has been formally nominated by Pakistan in the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Oscars.

Film Joy is an emotional drama film that revolves around the life of a married man who falls in love with a transgender but is caught between the traditional notion of his family and his desire to live the life he wants.
