Maria B had urged all her followers to boycott the upcoming film Joyland – which was slated to be released on November 18 – because “it shows an extramarital affair between two men but also encourages gender transition surgery”.

She was of the view, “The designer pointed out the dangers of gender ideology and wrote, “the west is waking up and recognising the dangers of gender ideology which defies biological sexes and scientific facts.” The fashion designer urged Pakistanis to raise their voices to ban Joyland.

It is yet to be confirmed that a ban was imposed on the film by the concerned authority, however, the certification of its screening was reviewed and cancelled.

Criticising the point of view expressed by Maria B, Shehzad Ghias Shaikh tweeted, “Would Maria B. equally celebrate if her fashion show is banned for the same reasons?”

A Twitter user mocked the fashion designer and said, “Where is Maria B’s dupatta/hijab in accordance with Quran and sunnah? How are her sleeveless clothes in accordance to Quran and sunnah? What a hypocrite”

Actor Humayun Saeed tweeted, “Joyland has made Pakistan proud by becoming the first South Asian film to win the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. It is a story of our people told by our people for our people. Hoping for it to be made accessible to these very people #ReleaseJoyland”

Dr Akif Khan tweeted, “This hypocrite woman Maria B was once attached with the infamous red topi wala Zaid Hamid has problems with everything. Now his transphobe apprentice is trying to lead the moral brigade alongside a loser Senstor Mushtaq.”

In his twitter thread, he wrote, “Remember Zaid Hamid who runs (still do?) a so-called think tank named Brasstacks, considers himself a “Ghazwa e Hind Warrior” and was previously associated with a guy who claimed prophethood?”

Joyland was slated to be premiered in cinemas across Pakistan on November 18 while JI Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan demanded a ban on the movie.

The movie has also created a controversy which was highlighted by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan as he claimed that Joyland was against the institution of marriage and nikah and it depicts homosexuality.

In a Twitter message, JI Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan said that Joyland is against the social values of Pakistan and it tried to promote homosexuality.

The senator said that he was told by the information ministry that permission was given for the film to be released across Pakistan while the Film Censor Board did not find any controversial content in Joyland.

He said that such films are part of planned attacks on the social values of Pakistan and that the screening of Joyland should be banned. Senator Khan also announced to launch a campaign to ban the movie.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Oscars Selection Committee had shortlisted Joyland as the country’s submission to the 95th Academy Awards for the ‘International Feature Film Award’ category.
