Legendry Poet Munir Niazi, and “Poetess of Fragrance” Parveen Shakir, share the same excellence in Urdu poetry and unfortunately, December 26 marks the death anniversaries of both eminent poets of Pakistan.
Munir Niazi was a famous Urdu and Punjabi language poet, who was born in India in 1928.
Well-known for his melodious ghazals, Niazi, was conferred with the Pride of Performance Award in 1992 and Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 1998.
Munir Niazi proved himself as a famous Pakistani movie songwriter along with a few pieces for newspapers and radio as well. He also launched a weekly “Saat Rang” in 1949 from Sahiwal.
His songs in famous films include “Uss bewafa ka shehar hai” for Shaheed in 1962 and “Zinda rahen to kiya hai mar jaen hum to kiya” for Kharidar in 1976.
Niazi’s work in the Punjabi language also remained well-acclaimed. He has published three books namely “Safar di Raat”, “Char Chup Cheezan” and “Rasta Dasan Walay Teray”.
Munir was awarded Kamal-e-Funn Award for the year 2002 by the Pakistan Academy of Letters.
His poetry left deep impressions on his contemporaries and young poets. Some of his Urdu collections include “Taiz Hawa aur Tanha Phool”, “Jungle main Dhanak” and “Mah-e-Munir”.
Similarly, it has been 26 years, since the demise of one of the popular poets of Pakistan, Parveen Shakir, who passed away in a car accident in 1994.
Author of “Khushbo”, one of the most famous collections, was conferred with Pride of Performance Award in 1990 and Adamjee Award in 1976.

Shakir will always be remembered for pioneering female experiences on love, romance, and intimacy. She remains the first in Urdu literature who used feminism and feelings associated with gender in her writings.
Remembered as “Poetess of Fragrance”, Parveen’s works include “Khushbo”, “Khudkalami”, “Mah-e-Tamam”, “Inkaar”, and “Sad Barg”.
Her car collided with a bus when she was on her way to work in Islamabad.
Parveen Shakir, who died at the young age of 42 and Munir Niazi, who died of respiratory illness, share the death anniversaries on December 26.
