Sunderland Designer Pays Tribute to Freddie Mercury

A Sunderland designer has paid tribute to at least one his favorite musicians on what would are his 75th birthday with the creation of a singular art piece

Darren Timby, 39, from Roker, made the artwork of Queen star Freddie Mercury over a three-week period using approximately 14,000 screws, coinciding with what would are Mercury’s 75th birthday on Sunday, September 5.

Darren was inspired together with his latest creation after seeing that The Saltgrass pub, in Ayres Quay, was hosting a celebration in honor of Mercury’s birthday.

He wanted to be a neighborhood of it and pay tribute to at least one of his favorite artists.

The Freddie Mercury piece has become Darren’s third artwork using only screws, with previous pieces of Monroe and Presley on display inside the art section at the Pigment and Toil Gallery inside the Bridges plaza.

Speaking about his latest creation, Darren told the Echo: “I’ve been a huge Queen and Freddie fan ever since he died once I was about 10. My mam got me into their music and that I was hooked on all their albums.

“When I heard the Saltgrass was having a tribute birthday bash for Freddie it had been an excellent excuse to undertake and obtain it done.

“With my previous pieces of Marilyn and Elvis I wasn’t on a deadline, but i actually wanted to urge this wiped out time for Freddie’s birthday and therefore the Saltgrass celebration so it had been quite intense three weeks. Freddie has always been on my list to try to, he’s one among my favorites.”

The Freddie Mercury 75th birthday event at The Saltgrass on Sunday, starting at 5 pm, is going to be a celebration of the lifetime of the previous Queen front man.

Fancy dress is inspired and there’ll be a performance from North East Queen tribute band, We Are Champion.

Darren’s pieces are going to be front and center during the celebration, staying within the Salthouse for one week when, unless sold, it’ll join his other pieces at the Pigment and Toil Gallery.

Other names on Darren’s list of potential future projects include Amy Winehouse, Keith Richards, and David Bowie. The designer is additionally considering doing a bit that might pay tribute to Sunderland’s industrial past.
