The 2019 Netflix comedy-drama film, The Laundromat, mentioned Nawaz Sharif's corruption as the movie was based on Panama Papers leak.

The 2019 Netflix comedy-drama film, The Laundromat, mentioned Sharif family’s corruption as the movie was based on ‘Panama City law firm and its vested interest in helping the world’s wealthiest citizens amass larger fortunes.’

The Laundromat’s storyline stated, “When her idyllic vacation takes an unthinkable turn, Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep) begins investigating a fake insurance policy, only to find herself down a rabbit hole of questionable dealings that can be linked to a Panama City law firm and its vested interest in helping the world’s wealthiest citizens amass larger fortunes.”

It read, “Founding partners Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas) are experts in the seductive ways shell companies and offshore accounts help the rich and powerful prosper. They are about to show us that Ellen’s predicament only hints at the tax evasion, bribery and other illicit absurdities that the super wealthy indulge in to support the world’s corrupt financial system.”

The IMDB storyline further stated, “Zipping through a kaleidoscope of detours in China, Mexico, Africa (via Los Angeles) and the Caribbean en route to 2016’s Panama Papers publication – where journalists leaked the secret, encrypted documents of Mossack Fonseca’s high-profile patrons – THE LAUNDROMAT’s ensemble cast includes Jeffrey Wright, Melissa Rauch, Jeff Michalski, Jane Morris, Robert Patrick, David Schwimmer, Cristela Alonzo, Larry Clarke, Will Forte, Chris Parnell, Nonso Anozie, Larry Wilmore, Jessica Allain, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Matthias Schoenaerts, Rosalind Chao, Kunjue Li, Ming Lo, with James Cromwell and Sharon Stone.

It also mentioned the corrupt practices of the ruling Sharif family including former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Several netizens suggested people to watch the movie to find out corrupt practices of the world’s wealthiest citizens.

A columnist and banker Javed Hassan wrote on Twitter, “Highly Recommend ‘The Laundromat’ – a movie about the Panama Papers, which exposed Mossack Fonseca &Co, the Panamanian law firm & corporate service provider (money launderers) to drug lords, SubSaharan dictators, all manner of criminals, and ‘saviours of democracy’ Sharif family.”

Another Twitter user said, “If you want to know how sharif family and others named in panama papers laundered money, just watch ‘The Laundromat’. They explained it so well and yes our former PM Nawaz Sharif is also in the movie. Another proud moment for the country. And if you’re wondering, current government can bring back that laundered money, sadly they cannot. Just google panama papers and see the list of people listed from Pakistan, you’ll be shocked to see the names of the people from politics, media and business community.”

Ishaq Dar calls Panama Papers leak ‘drama’

On the other hand, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has termed Panama Papers leak just a drama which exposed the corruption of elites of several countries even the stories were being narrated by filmmakers globally including 2019 The Laundromat.

While addressing a press conference today, Dar termed Panama Papers just a drama to oust Nawaz Sharif. He made the statement while commenting on political victimisation in Pakistan.

He was of the view that people involved in corruption should be penalised but innocent citizens should not be victimised through the accountability process.
