Amazon Releasing More Carbon Dioxide Than Absorbing

A research study suggests that the giant forest had previously been a carbon sink but now causing carbon dioxide acceleration indicating climate change

The Guardian has reported that the Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest tropical rainforest, is emitting more carbon dioxide than it can absorb which is a billion tons a year.

A research study suggests that the giant forest had previously been a carbon sink but now causing carbon dioxide acceleration which indicates climate change.

“Most of the emissions are caused by fires, many deliberately set to clear land for beef and soy production. But even without fires, hotter temperatures and droughts mean the south-eastern Amazon has become a source of carbon dioxide, rather than a sink”, the article read.

The researchers used small planes to measure carbon dioxide levels that showed how the Amazon is changing.

The scientists after the research have shown growing concerns over gas emission and maintained that the change is likely due to deforestation and fires.

“Fewer trees meant less rain and higher temperatures, making the dry season even worse for the remaining forest”, the report said.
