HYDERABAD: A horrible blunder was made at a hospital in the Tharparkar district during the breech birth of a baby girl last week which led to the 32-year-old Hindu woman suffering multiple traumas as she underwent another operation to remove the baby’s head from her abdomen.

A breech birth is one in which the baby’s bottom or feet come out of the mother first.

The baby’s head was severed at a Chhachhro hospital during the breech birth by the inexperienced staff and its head got trapped in the womb while the mother’s condition was declared critical. Later, she was shifted to Mithi hospital for its retrieval.

It was reported that the gynaecologist was not on duty at the Chhachhro hospital when the horrible incident took place last week.

At Mithi hospital, the staffers rejected to handle the case and told the family about the unavailability of the sensitive operation facility and referred the case to Civil Hospital Hyderabad.

The woman later underwent another procedure for removal of the baby’s head from her abdomen at the Hyderabad hospital where doctors declared the mother’s condition stable.

Senior doctor Erum and Dr Uzma Thebo conducted the operation and saved the mother’s life. Director-General of Sindh Health Services Dr Jumman ordered two separate inquiries into the incident and constituted a three-member committee headed by Dr Zahid Mehmood.
