WEB DESK: Italy has announced new tightening restrictions amid a surge in coronavirus cases with over 10,000 positive cases for second consecutive day.

The recent move has come as the country recorded its highest daily infection rate for the second day in a row.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that the measures were necessary to avoid another cycle of lockdown.

As per the premier, the mayors will get powers to close public areas after 10 pm. Conte said that the government would also review the opening times of restaurants and the number of people in a group to visit public places.

As many as 11,705 new cases surfaced across the country on Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 10,925 which were reported a day earlier on Saturday.

Italy was the hardest-hit European nation when the pandemic virus broke out. It has sp far recorded 414,000 confirmed coronavirus cases. The death tally of 36,500 in the country put it a place bottom of the United Kingdom (UK).
