Pakistan Fails to Vaccinate Already-Acute 400,000 Healthcare Workers

There are 222,221 registered doctors, 23,295 dentists and only 144,600 nurses in Pakistan against a population exceeding 200 million people

Pakistan seems to have a poor ground plan to vaccinate its already-acute healthcare workers according to global standards.

As the covid-19 situation in Pakistan deteriorates, National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) Chairman Asad Umar once again warned of tougher restrictions if the masses did not abide by precautionary guidelines.

Meanwhile, the country is moving at a snail’s speed to deliver jabs to its health workers who are already less in numbers as per global standards.

As quoted by The Express Tribune, Pakistan was short of over 200,000 doctors, 180,000 dentists, and 1.4 million nurses in 2019.

According to official figures, there were 222,221 registered doctors, 23,295 dentists and only 144,600 nurses in Pakistan against a population exceeding 200 million people.

But even their short numbers have not proven to be fruitful as the vaccination of healthcare workers remains lethargic.

On April 21, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Health Services Dr Faisal Sultan shared details of new portal where frontline healthcare workers could register themselves for coronavirus jabs until April 30.

This is in response to the sluggish response on part of the healthcare workers in the first phase of inoculation.

An American-Pakistani medical practitioner Dr Faheem Younus shed light on the importance of immunization against covid-19.

The third wave of coronavirus pandemic is proving to be more fatal and infectious. Pakistan recorded around 38,420 cases and nearly 795 deaths during the last week.

The infection rate has surged drastically during the third wave of pandemic and the contagion isn’t looking to wane as people continue to flout precautionary guidelines devised by the government to curb the virus.
