Fortune-Teller ‘Mumtaz Begum’ Captivates Global Attention

For more than 40 years this half-woman, half-fox has been telling fortunes from his cage in Pakistan Zoo

Mumtaz Begum, a woman with the body of a fox who resides in the second oldest zoo of Pakistan, Karachi Zoo, has recently gained recognition from the global platforms.

The begum has been famous for his advice and the ability to see the future.

The creature has been featured on an international travel website Atlas Obscura.

His story was also featured in the Unravel Malta and India’s Zee media.

Atlas Obscura is an online magazine and travel company, which catalogs unusual and obscure travel destinations via user-generated content.

Obscura was founded in 2009 by author, Joshua Foer and documentary filmmaker/author, Dylan Thuras.

As per the magazine, Mumtaz is no anomalous creature, but a performer named Murad Ali, who has been popular for his ability to see the future and advice accordingly.

The role was taken by Murad after his father passed away.

He has now been Mumtaz Begum for more than 40 years in her specially designed pavilion, Mumtaz Mahal.

Each day Ali paints his face with a thick layer of makeup and bright red lipstick and crawls into the box beneath Mumtaz’s cage.
