As Time Flies, New Wedding Customs Come to the Fore

Sheesha Pilai has taken over Doodh Pilai in weddings along with other customary deviations

In the Indian subcontinent, wedding customs are an essential part of wedding festivals. However, the practices do vary with the differences in regional and cultural values. “Doodh Pilai” (drinking milk ceremony) is one of the most popular customs in Pakistan but prevailing times have restyled the wedding rituals as well.

The custom of Shisha Pilai has taken over Doodh Pilai in Pakistan along with other ritual deviations like bride and groom smoking for their wedding shoot and a rare gift of Kalashnikov from mother-in-law to the groom.

Pakistani weddings are bright color festivals with events like dholki, mayon, mehndi, nikah, rukhsati, and reception with slight regional variations.

Doodh Pilai by the bridesmaids is an immensely admired custom of Pakistani weddings. However, Shisha Pilai has come to the fore instead of the customary Doodh Pilai.

Recently, a wedding festival video went viral on social media where the bride and groom were smoking Shisha as custom instead of Doodh Pilai. Wedded pair can be seen enjoying Shisha embellished with fresh flowers while the attendees lauded.

Earlier, the video of a couple smoking for their wedding shoot went viral on different social platforms. The couple was strongly criticized but a few came up to their support by calling it “a personal act with the couple’s will”.

Another video of a mother-in-law gifting unique gift to her son-in-law also stirred a debate. A Pakistani woman can be seen gifting a Kalashnikov to the groom as the wedding gift in the video.
