Amid depopulation due to the covid-19 pandemic, Calabria, a region in Southern Italy, is offering up to €28,000 for those who are willing to get residency in beachside towns or villages.

It is yet to be decided that the payment will be paid on a monthly basis, ranging from €1,000 to €800 ($1,580 to $1,265) each time across a maximum period of three years, or in a lump sum to help kickstart the new businesses.

As per the regional councilor Gianluca Gallo, the authorities have been honing the technical details about the monthly amount, and duration of the funds.

According to the Mayor of Altomonte province, the residency offer is to draw people to live in the almost deserted towns of southern Italy.

“Uncertain tourism and the one-euro houses are not the best ways to revamp Italy’s south”, he added.
