60-year-old Man Translates Quran in Pashto

PESHAWAR: “I started translating Quran in Pashto language and after some 17 years, I have done it with Allah’s will”, said Faqeer Gul Kaka, a 60-year-old hand-lettering expert who has translated the holy book in his mother tongue.

This is an attempt from a Charsadda-based 60-year-old calligraphy expert who is trying to preserve the art form for years. Even as the manual scripts have been replaced by printing machines and the art is on the verge of dying, Gul Kaka has not lost hope yet.

The elderly dedicated 47 years of his life to complete the self-assigned job he started nearly five decades ago in 1971.Gul Kaka believes that his long-pending dream is fulfilled after completing Quran’s Pashto translation.

Salas script has been used for Arabic writing and Naskh script has been used for Pashto translation.

“I always wanted to do something with my hands that I might get rewarded for on the judgment day”, he told News360.The typographer does not undermine the importance of technology.

He accepted that machine-printed Quran obviously had a clear script than one written with hands.

“It does not also consume much time”, he added and regretted that hand-calligraphy is winding down.The locals of the area said that the Quran written by Gul Kaka was easy to read.

They said that the line spacing in the handwritten Quran was meticulously maintained too.
