After Finance Minister Miftah Ismail and Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali, Azam Nazeer Tarar resigned as Federal Minister for Law and Justice citing ‘personal reasons’.

Sources said that Azam Nazeer Tarar parted ways with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led cabinet in protest over sloganeering against the institutions by some participants of the Asma Jahangir Conference.

Tarar tendered his resignation to President Dr Arif Alvi citing ‘personal reasons’.

Sources added that Tarar was also criticised for the elevation of junior judges to the Supreme Court (SC) by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).

They said that one of the main reasons for Tarar’s resignation could be the elevation of new judges to the SC who were elected yesterday.

While talking to a private TV channel yesterday, he said that “I did not vote personally in the JCP meeting but as a federal minister and this is the main reason for my resignation. I was against the appointment of these judges, but the government policy had to be enforced.”

The resignation came at the time when PM Sharif reached Saudi Arabia to pay a two-day official visit.

Sloganeering against institutions

On Sunday, the Asma Jahangir Conference held in Lahore witnessed unexpected events as some of the people from the audience started sloganeering against Pakistan Army in the presence of top ministers and journalists.

A group of people from the audience started chanting slogans against Pakistan Army during Asma Jahangir Conference in Lahore, however, no action was taken nor any speaker stopped them from raising the controversial slogans.

The moments were seen when several notable personalities including ministers and journalists were present on the stage including Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) chairman Manzoor Pashteen, Balochistan National Party Mengal (BNP-M) chief Akhtar Mengal and others.

The event was also attended by Foreign Minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

Several videos of the anti-Pakistan Army sloganeering were posted on social media, however, no action was taken as yet.

Firebrand PTM chairman Manzoor Pashteen also took aim at the Pakistan Army and said that democracy does not exist in the country but a monarchy and the army chief becomes the King who issues all orders.

During Bilawal’s speech, several people from the audience stood up and chanted slogans to demand the release of the incarcerated Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from South Waziristan and co-founder of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM).

When his speech was interrupted several times, Bilawal asked the protestors to demand his release from those who have the power to release him. He said, “You should go and protest in front of those who have the power to release him [MNA Ali Wazir].”
