After key appointments, some Pakistan Army generals decide to take early retirement

According to reports, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed and Lt Gen Azhar Abbas decided to take early retirement while Lt Gen Nauman Mehmood is also considering the option.

Lt Gen Azhar Abbas and Lt Gen Faiz Hameed have started considering early retirement from service after the new army chief and chairman joint chiefs of staff committee (CJCSC) appointment.

Sources told News360, Lt Gen Nauman Mehmood may also take early retirement while Lt. Gen. Muhammad Amir has also been asked to resign.

The reports came at a time when the government has appointed General Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as CJCSC for the next three years.

Lt Gen Faiz Hameed and Lt Gen Azhar Abbas were among the six candidates for the two highest posts in the Pakistan Army.

Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, who is currently serving as Bahawalpur Corps Commander, is scheduled to retire on 30 April 2023 while Lt Gen Azhar Abbas is currently serving as the Chief of General Staff (CGS) whose retirement is also due on April 27, 2023.

As mentioned in the beginning, Lieutenant General Nauman Mehmood can also take early retirement, however, the sources do not confirm this, however, they confirm that he is considering retirement.

It should be remembered that in the seniority list received by the Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood’s name was third and he is an army officer with a strong career.

Lieutenant General Nauman Mehmood is considered an expert in the army regarding the western borders of Pakistan.

Nauman Mehmood’s father Colonel Raja Sultan participated in the 1971 war but is a missing-in-action officer. Nauman Mehmood had joined his father’s Unit 22 Baloch Command.

On the other hand, sources said that the resignation of Lieutenant General Muhammad Amir has been requested and he has been assured that he will be appointed as an ambassador abroad after his retirement.

Lt Gen Muhammad Amir belongs to the artillery and has also been the Military Secretary of former President Asif Ali Zardari.

He was the Director General Staff Duties of former Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and supervised the affairs of the Army Chief Secretariat. As a Major General, he also commanded the Lahore Division.

Lieutenant General Muhammad Amir is currently the Corps Commander Gujranwala, before that he was Adjutant General at GHQ.
