Artists, Scholars Say Abusive Language as Culture of Punjab

Senior artists and literary figures have endorsed that using abusive language is the culture of Punjab. While talking to News360, they said that Punjab’s culture was vast and elimination of foul language from conversation was not possible.

The literary personalities and artists at Lahore’s Al-Hamra Arts Council said it was common in the culture of Punjab to use abusive language during conversation and people don’t get offended.

After the commotion in the national assembly in which lawmakers used profane language against each other, Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) MNA from Lahore Sheikh Rohale Asghar had contended that using abusive words is Punjab’s culture.

Senior artist Masood Akhtar said Punjab’s culture was vast and it includes foul language just like drama, dance, and satire.

Poet and writer Dr Kanwal expressed that the culture of Punjab consists of a variety of elements one of which was the use of profane language. He added that friends abuse each other to show affection. He opined that this culture could not be eradicated but it could be limited.

Further, senior playwright Munir Raj said the commotion in legislatures was common around the world.

He expressed that Punjab’s culture has a loud deliverance and that is why when women and men talk, it looks like that they are fighting.

A Punjabi person doesn’t consider foul language as bad because he is habitual of using it.
