Ballon d’Or Award: Messi Wins Best Football Player Award for 7th time

Lionel Messi, a 34-year-old Argentine footballer, has surpassed Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo for the seventh time this year at the most prestigious football awards in Paris, France, scoring an extraordinary 40 goals. The most prestigious trophy in football is Ballon d’Or award.

Messi’s won the Ballon d’Or trophies for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015, and won his first major international title in July 2019 with the defeat of Brazil by arch-rivals Argentina in the Copa America final.

After receiving the award at the ceremony, Messi said: “It’s really incredible to be here again. The last time I thought it was the last chance. Now maybe I can’t win any big award.” People often ask me when I’m retiring, but as you can see, I’m very happy to be here in Paris and receiving an international award,” he said.

Lewandowski scored 53 goals in all competitions for Bayern in 2021 and was awarded the Striker of the Year award, a new award announced just hours before the start of the ceremony.

Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski was second, Chelsea and Italy midfielder Georginho third and Real Madrid’s French striker Karim Benzema fourth at the Ballon d’Or award.
