Best Performances of “Just Retired” Mohammad Amir

In 2009, he wasn't the top wicket-taker of the match, but took the biggest wicket in the very first over

Mohammad Amir may have retired from the game but cricket fans will not forget him for a long time. With him bowling, anything was possible especially when he was playing in a big match.

Let’s go through some of his best bowling performances:

ICC World T20 Final – 2009

For Pakistan, it was going to be a tough match considering they lost the previous final by a whisker against India. Here, they were facing the mighty Sri Lankans and had to come up with something extra.

Here is where Mohammad Amir came in. He was raw, he was an unknown and above all, he wanted to start his career with a bang. He wasn’t the top wicket-taker of the match, but took the biggest wicket in the very first over, setting the pattern for Pakistan to clinch the grand finale in style.

Five Australian wickets fell in one Amir over in ICC World T20 – 2010

It was again a World T20 match where Pakistan was against the Awesome Aussies, until it came down to the final over. Batting first, they were cruising towards a huge total when they began the over but after dismissing Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson on the first two deliveries, Amir’s accurate bowling made the batsmen scramble for singles off successive deliveries and see their partner run out.

He then returned to wicket-taking with the final delivery and ended the over with 3 wickets to his name, and the team getting five without a run being added to the score.

Asia Cup vs India – 2016

Before there was the final of 2017 Champions Trophy, there was the league match of the Asia Cup, the first time an in-form Rohit Sharma and Indian big wigs Ajankya Rahane and Suresh Raina had no clue regarding Amir’s bowling.

Both Rohit and Rahane went in the first over facing two and one delivery respectively while Raina was lucky enough to open his account, only to falter on the fourth ball.

Pakistan lost the match but they got to know that against Amir, the Big Three of Indians are nothing but club cricketers!

ICC Champions Trophy Final – 2017

With Mauqa Mauqa commercial making fun of Pakistan on TV and India winning the first encounter between the two sides in the tournament, Pakistan was all set for a humiliating defeat against the defending champions.

Yet Mohammad Amir had a different idea, one that he implemented and got Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shikar Dhawan out in style.

His bowling in that match ended the reign of Mauqa Mauqa and gave rise to Kohli Tujhse Nahi Hota Chase, something that had the same effect on the Indians as their commercial did to Pakistan.

Lords Test – 2018

When he returned to the place where it all went bad for him, Amir tried his best to make things right and succeeded. Not only did he dismiss Sir Alistair Cook in the first innings, but he also accounted for Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Dom Bess, and Mark Wood in the second, helping Pakistan to a historic win by nine wickets at Lord’s.

17 Wickets in ICC World Cup – 2019

In what turned out to be his only ICC World Cup – he was banned before the World Cup 2011 and returned to the side after the one in 2015 – Amir was on fire and finished with 17 wickets in just 8 matches.

His best wasn’t good enough and Pakistan narrowly missed entering the last four, but his fans would take back his accurate bowling and aggression that is so missing in the Pakistan bowling line up.

Super Over for Karachi Kings vs Multan Sultans in PSL 2020

He was declared an outcast by the management and then he was ‘unselected’ and dropped. Mohammad Amir came out all guns blazing against the PCB and its management.

In a match that was to decide the finalist of the PSL 2020, Amir was asked to bowl the Super Over, and he ensured that whatever he bowled was super!

Chasing 14 runs to win, Multan Sultan sent Ravi Bopara and Rilee Rossouw to do the job, and they found themselves on the receiving end of an Amir who had nothing to lose.

Yes, he lost his line during the over but even then, he didn’t let the power hitters complete the task and guided his team to victory.
