‘Backstairs Powers’ Want Government and PDM Divide End

PDM seems to be in trouble as its prominent leaders seem to be parting ways as the deadline given to the government for stepping down draws near

The divide between the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government seems to contract as the backstairs powers have jumped in for cooling down the political temperature and to save the democratic system from ‘derailing’.

Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) Secretary-General Muhammad Ali Durrani sprung up suddenly and met with Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) President and National Assembly Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif in Kot Lakhpat jail on Thursday.

He delivered the message of PML-F Chief Pir of Pagaro to find a midway and talk with the government.

Later after the meeting, Durrani talked with multiple media outlets in which he claimed that the opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif seemed positive and soft and was ready to hold talks with the government and find a midway.

He asserted that both the government and PDM will have to sit for dialogue to end the divide.

Meanwhile, Pakistan People’s Party has also distanced itself from PDM after the opposition’s alliance has taken a hardline and not ready to become flexible.

Meanwhile, a thaw has been witnessed after the recent developments in the political scenario as ex-Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had his name removed from the Exit Control List (ECL) since he wanted to travel to United States (US) to visit her sister who has contracted novel coronavirus.

However, it seems that the anti-government PDM has divided into two camps after Durrani met with Shehbaz.

Asif Zardari-Shehbaz Sharif camp is apparently ready to ‘mend things’ with the PTI government.

However, Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz, Supremo Nawaz Sharif, and Jamiat-e-Ulema Fazl (JUI-F) Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman have taken a hardline against the government and have ruled out a surrender or retreat.

Maryam Nawaz has denied any possibility of holding talks with the government after sharing her thoughts via Twitter.

Besides, Maryam Nawaz, while addressing media in Lahore on Saturday, affirmed that PDM will not hold talks with the government.

Referring to Bilawal Bhutto’s absence in the PDM’s rally in Mardan and turning down all speculations, the PML-N leader said that the people who conceived that anybody’s absence in the rallies was tantamount to divide in the alliance were mentally sick.

She reiterated that the opposition was not stepping back and the government would be startled when it would submit en masse resignations.

Meanwhile, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will organize a rally in Garhi Khuda Bax near Larkana on Dec 27 on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

However, it is being reported in the media that Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman will not attend the public gathering.

The mist concentrated on the glass that PPP is holding will only be clear after what its top brass will speak of in Larkana’s rally on Sunday and it would determine a direction what would the future of the PDM certainly be as the deadline of January 31 given by the opposition alliance is nears closer.
