“It was around 8:30 in the morning and I was on the second floor of a building,” he said. “Suddenly everything starts to vibrate. I look around and everything on the walls of the building shakes and rattles, and it took me a few seconds to realize that this is an earthquake. And when that happened, I was out of it Buildings ran.”

Everyone else too, said Jude. And everyone in the country felt the tremor, he said.

The ensuing tropical storm caused massive flooding and landslides in rural areas, Jude said. The buildings his organization built to modern standards did not collapse, he said, but many people were displaced after their huts collapsed and roofs collapsed.

Jude recently joined Practicing Catholic radio host Patrick Conley to describe how his organization is helping to meet the needs of the Haitian people.

Reiser Relief is a grassroots organization that works directly with religious sisters, including the Little Sisters of St. Therese, Sisters and Brotherhoods and Lay Catholics, said Jude to provide education, shelter for homeless children, shelter for the elderly, and other programs like agricultural initiative support and college sponsorships. It was founded by Father Bernard Reiser, who was also the founding pastor of Epiphany in Coon Rapids. He headed the organization until his death in 2011.

The organization’s priorities in Haiti today include providing food and medical aid “to everyone in need,” Jude said.

“There is a lot of hunger in this area right now,” Jude said while many Haitians sleep in the elements. “The sisters are doing everything they can to support the displaced people in the area.”
