Friends of PDM Become Foes in Gilgit Baltistan Poll

WEB DESK: The political temperature in Gilgit Baltistan (GB) is simmering every passing day as the giants from big political parties shake legs for electioneering.

Interestingly, the companions of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) have turned out to be foes to win the poll.

The opposition parties have not yet agreed upon contesting election with a joint candidate but preferring to vie separately.

The political parties would grapple for 22 seats of a total of 33 for the constitution of the third GB Assembly. There are some six reserved seats for women and three for technocrats.

Bilawal Bhutto of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has been in the region since October 22 for 22 days and running a rigorous election campaign to sweep opponents in the poll.

He has so far addressed the most number of gatherings during campaign, recalling the locals about the performance of the PPP’s inaugural government in the region.Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz reached Skardu yesterday and addressed a public gathering to kick-off her party’s election campaign. She is actively participating in political activities too.

Maryam Nawaz would lead a rally from Shagar to Skardu today while she would also participate in a meeting in Dambudas on November 7. She is all set to address a series of public gatherings in GB to warm-up party workers and supporters to get more votes in the election.

Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam Fazl (JUI-F) is also running its election campaign separately. In the previous election, it got the second position after PML-N which formed the government in GB.

Further, Prime Minister Imran Khan recently visited GB on its 73rd Independence Day and granted it “Provision Provincial’ status.

The move, believed by political experts, can make many votes fall into the lap of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
